As any industrial area, the lower valley of Biferno river in Molise, in the hinterland of Termoli, comes to terms with air quality: a subject
of great actuality, the main them of important debates which, often, ends with vague declarations of intents, followed by attempts to remove
the problem or, frequently, in adoption of periodical measure events for demonstrative purposes in order to reassure the public opinion but
deprived of any coherent strategy or scientific basis.
This project reverses the course and starts from a contrary principle: without any precise knowledge, the effective action of environmental
improvement is not obtainable. Starting from this assumption, the Consortium for Industrial Development of the valley of Biferno
(COSIB), with support
of Molise Regional Government, has decided to acquire deep and coherent
information about air quality in their district. The task has been entrusted
to a scientific team entirely unprecedented, coordinated by ENEA and composed of Italian and
foreign experts with common reseach goals.
The research/survey conducted in Molise represents a unique case in Italy of relationship between industry, environment and human health. Industry realized that the applied science is the only possible answer to need of conciliation between production and environmental protection; on the other hand science has been able to test and to refine a new method that could be now used in similar contexts.
An double example of virtuous synergy between the world of production and Sciences to draw a concrete line towards a sustainable development and a global vision and sensitivity, where the international researches converge on a specific territory to develop an innovative model reproducible on other territories.
